A friend of mine took this picture and I don't know who it is or who the artist is, if you are one of them, please introduce yourself. It's a killer tattoo, I love food tattoos and this one is done really well. Sweet Carrot!!!!!
This is some tasty Honduran Cup of Excellence Coffee that I was lucky enough to help judge in San Pedro Sula, Honduras in May of 2008. I was one of 20 judges that spent a week cupping and scoring these coffees. Portland Roasting and my friends at Fratello Coffee in Calgary went in together on this auction and ended up with a very special coffee. The farm is in Chinacla in the La Paz region which is about 15 miles for the El Salvador border, I wasn't able to get that far south but my next trip to Honduras will certainly take me to farms outside of the Santa Barbara area! If you are able to get your hands on some of the Cup Of Excellence coffees, you should really buy some, you will pay a bit more for your beans, but its worth it. If you are able to travel to Honduras, it's a beautiful country full of awesome people and killer coffee!
Last time I ate at Roake's, it wasn't a great experience, it certainly wasn't awful, but it left a bit to be desired. After my first post, quite a few people e-mailed me and weren't happy, people said that I needed to try the Coney Dog, after all, that's what they are known for. I had kind of forgotten about Roake's, but then a few weeks ago I got a very nice e-mail for the owner of Roake's offering me a gift certificate and wanted to know more about my experience, I explained that my trip to his restaurant was just kind of average, not bad, but not great either and I definitely didn't want a gift certificate! So I went back and got the Coney Dog and also got the Jr. Roaker, which is what Jim Roake recommended and I was pretty damn pleased with my order. If you are a fan of real Coney sauce, then you need to swing by Roake's and get exactly what I ordered and throw in some Coney Fries since you are there. I am now a big fan of Roake's, and look forward to trying some different menu items, I think the first time I ate there was just a off day and we all have those.
Ling Garden has been one of my "go to" places for quite some time, especially for lunch. I love this place, it has great food for a great price and everyone that works there is super nice. For under $7.00 you get your choice of entree, soup, rice and egg roll, although the lunch menu isn't quite as large as the dinner menu, there are still plenty of things to choose from. I find myself at Ling Garden quite a bit for lunch and have never been disappointed.
I tend to order one of three things, the General Tso's Chicken, Da Tsin Chicken or Beef with Broccoli and they are all killer! I don't know what it is about General Tso's Chicken, I know it's not Chinese at all and usually it doesn't taste that great, but I always have to try it and in my opinion, Ling Garden has some of the best in Portland. They are open for Lunch and Dinner every day and parking at that end of 21st us usually pretty mellow.
